Beverages such as Red Bull and other energy drinks have become very popular among young people nowadays, especially among teenagers. This popularity of energy drinks has results in an overuse of them by teenagers, which has lead to the consequences of banning them or putting and age-limit on them, which in its turn is not very popular among the young people consuming it. This overuse raises the question: why do young people tend to overuse energy drinks such as Red Bull?
Firstly; young people today are under a lot of pressure from school. Students in High School, and even in Junior High, have a lot of assignments to be done with and tasks to struggle through in achieving the grades and the satisfaction that they want, and need. All these tasks take up much of their time and they might think that they have not enough time doing it, which will lead to students being awake at night trying to keep up with their work. This is where the energy drinks come in handy. Teenagers start to drink these liquid energy boosts in their attempt to keep awake, both during night and during the following school days.
Secondly; it is not a secret that today’s teenagers are very interested in technology such as computers, internet and cell phones. This technology is something that tends to keep them up at night when they are supposed to get some valuable sleep. The usage of energy drinks then give them the energy boosts that they lack from not sleeping, and helps them to stay up at night while chatting with some friends, and also to give them energy enough to struggle through the long school days that comes after an all-nighter.
Finally; like many other things today energy drinks have become an addiction of some sort to teenagers. They might have tried it once or twice because one of their friends drank it and then got “stuck” in the addiction. These energy drinks are the new “cool”, being seen drinking one would definitely increase the teenagers’ popularity among their friends. Then when the teenagers are used in getting the energy boost that Red Bull and other energy drinks give it will be a hard time to stop consuming them.
So, it seems like the overuse of Red Bull and other similar beverages depends mostly on teenagers’ lack of sleep. There are some other causes, such as “coolness”, but in the end it almost always comes down to the fewer and fewer amount of sleeping hours the teenagers of today get.
